Women Wisdom Teachers: Jenny Wade

Women Wisdom Teachers: Jenny Wade

Jenny Wade (1952-present) is a research psychologist, lecturer, educator, organization and leadership development consultant, and professor at CIIS. She is the originator of and major contributor to the subfield of transpersonal sex, or, mystical experiences that happen to people while they are making love. In a YouTube video Dr. Wade disclosed that she became interested in transpersonal sex because of her own experiences, so she may also be classified as a mystic as well as a wisdom teacher.

Dr. Wade’s book Transcendent Sex (2004) was a milestone in the field. In this book, she documented the results of her research during which she interviewed 91 people who claimed to have had extraordinary human experiences (EHEs) during sex. These experiences included altered states of consciousness similar to those described in shamanism, the mystical literature of Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, the reliving of past lives, seeing the face of god, and other spiritual experiences. From her interviews Wade estimates that one in twenty people have had EHEs during lovemaking. In 2021 she published a review of the empirical literature of transpersonal sex to date, and called for more qualitative research to be done.

Wade’s earlier book, Changes of Mind, is a comprehensive theory of human consciousness drawing from developmental psychology, brain research, mysticism, and physics. In this book she makes the case for the self existing beyond the boundaries of time and the physical body. With many different research focuses, perhaps Dr. Wade’s work can be seen as having “an emphasis on higher values that produce real-world results, especially the realization of human potential” as well as “higher levels of human capacity and transformational development.” Dr. Wade is a great example of a woman who excels as an intellectual as well as in the spiritual realms.
