Women Mystics: Dion Fortune

Women Mystics: Dion Fortune

Dion Fortune (1890-1946) is widely considered one of the two most influential occultists of the 20th century (the other being Aleister Crowley). Born Violet Firth, Fortune was a psychotherapist, a powerful psychic, a ceremonial magician, and the author of over 20 books, both novels and nonfiction. She was a member of the Golden Dawn and the Theosophical Society, and she felt that she was personally instructed by Ascended Masters. Fortune established a mystery school, the Society of Inner Light, which is still active today. Her work is considered pivotal to neo-paganism and goddess-centered practitioners.

Fortune had experienced a breakdown in childhood which led to her studying psychotherapy. She began lecturing, working in a clinic, and when she became dissatisfied with the results of psychotherapy, began studying occultism. She practiced trance mediumship, remembering past lives, and contacting disincarnate beings. She was active in the war efforts of the First World War, and organized groups to meditate and otherwise try to influence the downfall of the Nazis in World War II.

Fortune was particularly interested in the issue of sex. In her work, she stated that all magic is sex magic, as sex is the life force of the universe. Fortune wrote that in Atlantis, people had paired off into couples for sex magic work in order to advance their evolutionary progress. She believed that the sex energy that flowed between partners could be harnessed for magical use. Her book  The Esoteric Philosophy of Love and Marriage is in many ways a precursor of modern neotantra in its teaching of the use of sacred sex as a method for relationship enhancement and love.
