26 Jul Transcendent Sex as Path
This is something we have not encountered before in the ascending literature. The goal of spirituality has been seen as a personal, individual striving toward the highest levels of awareness, i.e. enlightenment. The path was portrayed as isolated, individual, and non-relational. Here we have something entirely different, a couple whose mutual love and spiritual connection advance them toward enlightenment as one union. They were using tantric techniques, but their love and devotion to each other revealed mystical and esoteric teachings. More research needs to be done on this topic.
Effers (2009) cautions that the West turning to Hindu, Buddhist, or Taoist thought and practices may be problematic, and that we do not yet have a Western tradition:
The absence of a well-developed spiritual discipline to address and extend the ecstatic potentials inherent in sexuality is a condition that demands our attention (p. 146).
