31 May Tibetan Tantric Buddhism: Transpersonal Experiences
Tibetan spirituality developed techniques for inducing altered states and using them to improve health, encourage long-life, and evolve spiritually; the top three purposes according to Jacoby (2015). These techniques included mantras, ritual, dance, yantras, and mudras (Bernbaum, 1974) as well as sexual practices (Allione, 2000).
Tibetan religion was almost exclusively male and hierarchical (Allione, 2000), with women often serving as vehicles for men’s individual evolution. It cannot be said, therefore, that any of the transpersonal experiences had by Tibetan techniques were particularly healing for half the population, but only for a rare elite.
