13 May Top Ten Spiritual L.A. Movies
Including TV shows and videos. In no particular order – watch them all and you decide — What’s your favorite?
Holy Hell – Sex and scandal abound in this film about the Buddhafield cult surrounding the charismatic teacher, Michel. But wait, isn’t there something about his eyes?
The Source Family – Fascinating film about the cult surrounding Father Yod and his 13 wives brings the viewer the full flavor of the spiritual renaissance of the 70s
City of Angels – Maybe not the best movie in the world, but to see Santa Monica Beach graced by an army of gorgeous angels is worth the price of admission
Bikram: Yogi, Guru, Predator – Arrogance run amok.
Awake: The Life of Yogananda – Gorgeous.
Children of God (narrated by Helen Mirren) – About the cult that spawned Flirty Fishing.
Reza Aslan’s show Believer – CNN TV series. The episode featuring Scientology is the only objective, non-hysterical reporting I’ve encountered.
Strange Angel – CBS TV series on the life of Jack Parsons (with guest appearances by “L Ron Hubbard” and “Aleister Crowley”).
6 Generations — Documentary about Chumash history, narrated by a Chumash Elder.
Honorable Mentions — YouTube Docs:
Leonard Knight and his Technicolor Mountain (Salvation Mountain)
Aimee Semple McPherson – American Masters
Joshua Tree – A Planet of Music and Cosmic Energy (psychedelic rock ’n’ roll)
