23 Jan Peace Awareness Labyrinth and Gardens
Billing itself as “A Spiritual Oasis in the City,” the Peace Awareness Labyrinth and Gardens is a gift of the Movement of Spiritual Inner Awareness (MSIA) (see pg xxx). A free meditation garden, there are numerous terraces with places to sit and contemplate, listen to the trickle of water fountains, or walk the labyrinth which is a replica of the one at Chartes Cathedral in France built in 1214.
Admission is free, but you’ll need to make a reservation in advance. First-time attendees are required to attend a brief informational tour about the house and property, thankfully without any aroma of proselytizing.
Lots of people were attending to various tasks while I was there, working on computers or doing set-up for that evening’s event. I kept getting asked if I was okay, and where was my badge? It was a bit unnerving, but perhaps all this attention to security is due to the fact that the gentrification of the neighborhood is going slowly.
The Gardens felt confined and overly supervised to me, and I did not get a “spiritual vibe.” However, my friend Michael loves it and goes frequently to meditate and get centered. He says he always feels incredibly calm and refreshed after his visits there.
Our tour guide never mentioned Arianna Huffington (page xxx), so I asked if she is still involved. “Oh yes,” he said proudly. “She most definitely is.”
