Eight Famous Churches in LA

Cathedral of Our Lady of Angels

Completed in 2002, the seat of the LA Roman Catholic Archdioses. There are little finds all over the place – holy relics, statues, paintings, the garden. The modern architecture is loved by some, not so (vehemently) by others. What’s your vote?

555 W Temple St, Los Angeles, CA 90012

First African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church of Los Angeles

Began in 1972, this is the oldest church founded by African Americans in Los Angeles. It counts more than 19,000 members.

2270 Harvard, Los Angeles, CA 90018

Good Shepherd Church

Famous because of the worldwide fascination with the 17-year old Elizabeth Taylor whose wedding to the heir to the Hilton fortune was held here in 1950. Can you say paparazzi?

504 N Roxbury Drive, Beverly Hills, CA 90210

Hollywood United Methodist Church

You’ve seen it on your way to the Hollywood Bowl – the church on the corner of Highland and Franklin with the HIV/AIDS red ribbon on it. (Insider tip – the parking lot is open for Bowl goers and your fee is a donation to the church.)

6817 Franklin Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90028

Holy Transfiguration Russian Orthodox Cаthedral

Been curious about that fabulous “castle” you can see off the 101 near Fountain and Western? Well, now you know it’s one of L.A.’s three Russian Orthodox churches.

5432 Fernwood Ave, Los Angeles, California 90027

La Placita – Iglesia Nuestra Señora Reina de los Angeles

L.A.’s first church founded in 1784 only three years after the official birthdate of Los Angeles. Across the street from El Pueblo de Los Angeles (home of Olvera Street).

535 N Main St, Los Angeles, CA 90012

Los Angeles California Temple

That sprawling lawn, that gorgeous temple – the second largest LDS (Mormon) temple in the world. You can get a grounds pass, but you can’t go inside to glimpse the secrets you want to see.

10777 Santa Monica Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90025

Mosaic Church

Movement begun in L.A. Now has 7 locations. Christian, evangelical, into music, was once housed in a night club.

7107 Hollywood Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90046

 OASIS CHURCH

Noted for sponsoring a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Jesus Christ. Famous church members have included Donna Summer, disco queen, and Viola Davis, Oscar-winning actor.
