17 Feb Joshua Tree National Park
People not on a spiritual quest go to Joshua Tree National Park for the hiking, nature trails, strange landscapes, and the wildflowers, and JT is a big rock climbing destination. It is definitely awe-inspiringly beautiful, and there are many sporting opportunities.
Spiritual people, however, have been long attracted to the region for these and other reasons: the “energy,” the ley lines and vortices, the unearthly quiet which naturally leads to a quiet mind and meditation, the attraction of UFOs and nature spirits. Many questing types go to the Park to take psychedelic drugs to help reach higher states of consciousness.
I couldn’t locate where the mountain is where all the rock stars went in the 60s (see page xxx) other than to learn that it is 12 miles in. After numerous Internet searches, I left two voicemails for the Park Service which were unreturned. They don’t want people to know about this? They don’t want the Park used this way? That’s a shame — we’d like to go there.
There are two entrances to the Park: one on Highway 10 beyond Palm Springs, and the one in 29 Palms off Highway 62 which makes more sense for this Tour.
