10 Mar The Interplanetary Airport and the Come On Inn
One of the more unconventional individuals in greater LA spiritual history was George Van Tassel (March 12, 1910 – February 9, 1978). Van, as he was called, used knowledge he received from ETs to build the Integratron, and held yearly UFO conventions at Giant Rock that attracted upward of 11,000 attendees.
Van Tassel had worked in the aerospace industry before moving himself and his family to Giant Rock in 1947 to take over the tiny airport landing field there. They lived in the hollowed-out rooms under the rock, and Mrs. Van Tassel started a small café called The Come On Inn.
In 1953, Van was visited by a ship from Venus which took him aboard and taught him secrets of life extension, time travel, and metaphysics. He continued over the years to receive transmissions from a being named Solgonda, which led to several books including I Rode a Flying Saucer. Van Tassel started The Ministry of Universal Wisdom to share the information he was receiving.
The family ran UFO conventions at Giant Rock from 1953-78 featuring all the big names from the time: scientists, UFO contactees, and meditators who attended the sessions in Van’s home under the Rock. The money generated from these gatherings was used to help build the Integratron.
George Van Tassel died unexpectedly in 1978 at the early age of 68. The family compound at Giant Rock was left to ruin and was eventually bulldozed by the Bureau of Land Management. Interestingly, the FBI kept files on George Van Tassel which to this date have not been released.
