Like any clear statement of the truth, Catherine, your article on "Spiritual Bypass" is a breath of fresh air. The means we adopt to guide us may in fact short-circuit our progress.

For my ninth birthday, my mother took me and my girlfriends to see the movie "The Sound of Music." I loved imagining myself skipping through alpine meadows or waltzing in Christopher Plummer's arms. The scene that really stayed with me, though, was of the Mother Superior telling the frightened young Maria that she could not use the convent as a place to hide from her life's challenges. She must "clinb every mountain, forge every stream, follow every byway, till you find your dream," even if it meant leaving the holy walls of the convent.

In my twenties, as it became clear that my life's journey would be in the vehicle of Sikh Dharma, I remembered those words. They came to me as I struggled to let go of being 'good' or 'right' in order to be real and whole. Fortunately for me, at several critical junctures, there was an astute psychotherapist or coach or other wise counselor, who would not let me hide from the frightful parts of myself that I needed to integrate in order to be whole as well as holy.

My journey is far from over. May I and everyone who seeks to live the truth have the courage and the self-kindness to accept genuine care and guidance along the way.

My observation of myself and others is that if the "lower" levels are incomplete, they will nag for attention, taking it away from what we think we should be working on. Hence, in psychotherapy, how we often go back to finish what is unfinished.

So yes, we often might "calculate percentages" of fulfillment in the various areas to see where we need to do some work.

Maslow's pyramid always seemed to make sense to me, but now that I look at it again, I wonder. Is it possible to exist happily in a higher level (albeit incompletely) while the lower levels still have issues?

Further, could the percentage of fulfillment in each level estimate the comfort, or even happiness, of a particular individual's experience? Or is that too calculating?

Having had similar experiences with sever mentally ill individuals, as well as other who were experiencing a spiritual awaking. Psychosis, from my experience, is always accompanied by a great deal of fear and paranoia. Where a person is experiencing a major spiritual breakthrough or "initiation" , he or she may be overwhelmed, but from fear. More likely, he/she will be in a highly blissful state.

In any case, I appreciate you addressing the issue. Thank for your contribution in furthering a sane approach to spiritual psychotherapy.
